Multiple Sarcasms

Unhappy architect Gabriel (Timothy Hutton in unmade-bed form) dreams of shucking his job and becoming a playwright; his steady wife Annie (Dana Delany) isn't sure about the idea, but at least he has the counsel of his best friend Cari (Mira Sorvino) to help him along. The pieces of a vintage Woody Allen-esque romantic-angst comedy are here: Manhattan setting, grown-up characters, nice apartments, narcissistic impulses. The moment in time, 1979, feels halfheartedly evoked, but the movie's main problem is that the protagonist's dilemma isn't sufficiently explored, either in the script by Linda Morris and director Brooks Branch, or in Timothy Hutton's frowzy performance. There are a couple of able supporting performances by Stockard Channing (as Gabriel's agent, whose friendship with him is conveniently available for his play-writing ambitions) and Mario Van Peebles (as Gabriel's colorfully gay coworker, he's one of the only people in the movie who seem to be having fun). Along with the relative ease of Gabriel's writing career, the film fails to surprise in laying out Gabriel's romantic destiny as well--as movies about male heroes with female best friends so often do

Actors: Timothy Hutton, Mira Sorvino, Dana Delany, Mario Van Peebles, Stockard Channing
Directors: Brooks Branch

Happy Tears

Synopsis
Jayne (Parker Posey) and Laura (Demi Moore) are about to take on the first man they just might not be able to handle: their father Joe (Rip Torn). Dutiful daughters returning to the house they grew up in, Jayne and Laura are forced to take a closer look at their own not-so-perfect lives. Laura suspects that Joe needs full-time care, but Jayne refuses to believe that their father's condition is serious. Jayne's compulsion to escape reality only increases Laura's attempts to yank her back down to earth. Meanwhile, Joe still sings and plays the blues on his prized guitar, and the lively widower even has a new "ladyfriend," shameless and sassy Shelly (Ellen Barkin). Tensions flare as Joe's senility increases and the close sisters must also juggle their own very different lives - but their adventures back home are not without merriment, mischief and even a little childhood magic.

Solomon Kane

The movie tells the origins of Solomon Kane and is hoped to be the first of a trilogy of movies. When the story opens Kane is a mercenary of Queen Elizabeth I fighting in Africa, but after an encounter with a demon, The Reaper, he realizes he must seek redemption or have his soul damned to Hell. He returns to Engand and lives a life of peace, converting to puritanism, but soon the doings of an evil sorceror upset his plans and he must take up arms again.

James Purefoy has been cast as puritan swordsman Solomon Kane in a movie of the same name to be made from the stories of “Conan the Barbarian” creator Robert E. Howard. Kane is a 16th century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him but is determined to redeem himself by living peaceably. But he finds himself dragged out of retirement for a fight against evil.
