Small Island


Adapted from the multiple prize-winning novel by Andrea Levy, BBC period drama SMALL ISLAND tells the story of Jamaican immigrants and Londoners involved in World War Two. Hortense (Naomie Harris) arrives in England with her new husband Gilbert (David Oyelowo); a proud and determined Jamaican woman, the marriage was one of convenience, on her part, to secure passage to a new life in the 'Mother Country'. The couple lodge with Queenie (Ruth Wilson) a good-hearted young woman, originally from Yorkshire. Queenie's reliable yet dull husband Bernard (Benedict Cumberbatch) has been away fighting in the war, when he returns he does so a changed man, traumatised by what he's seen. The two women's backgrounds couldn't be more different, and yet their lives and destinies are brought together by one man, Michael (Ashley Walters), whose actions change everything.

Synopsis
