You Don't Know Jack

Made for HBO, Barry Levinson's sympathetic telefilm casts an affable eye on a serious subject: the mission of Jack Kevorkian (a thoroughly de-glamorized Al Pacino). In the opening sequence, Kevorkian tells his long-suffering sister, Margo (Brenda Vaccaro, excellent), how hard he found it to watch their mother die a long and agonizing death. Convinced that the terminally ill deserve the right to die with dignity, he shares his beliefs with Jack (James Urbaniak), a Detroit journalist; Janet (Susan Sarandon), a Hemlock Society leader; and Neal (John Goodman), a medical supply salesman (the scenes of Neal and Jack playing poker recall Levinson's Diner). Before he's assisted a single patient, Kevorkian makes the national news, prompting Neal to quip, "You're not a local quack anymore. You're America's quack." Writer Adam Mazer profiles several of the 130 patients to take advantage of his "mercy machine," starting with Janet Adkins, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. For protection, Jack acquires the services of attorney Geoffrey Fieger (Danny Huston), who supports him through evictions, lawsuits, jail time, and hunger strikes--until Kevorkian engineers his own downfall by defending himself. As with HBO's Recount, Levinson adds archival footage at key points, such that Barbara Walters and others appear to play themselves. If he handles Jack's quirks with humor, he always treats the afflicted with respect, and if Pacino's accent skews more New York than Michigan, his pleasure in playing this strong-willed eccentric fuels Levinson's finest directorial effort in ages.

Los Bastardos

Synopsis
A multiple award winner and 2008 Cannes Film Festival selection, Amat Escalante's Los Bastardos "looks and sounds very impressive" (Variety), and makes an indelibly disturbing impact.

Like the rest of the day-laboring migrant workers who gather together each morning on a southwestern American strip mall sidewalk, Jesus (Jesus Moises Rodriguez) and Fausto (Rubén Sosa) struggle to get ahead in El Norte. But when a callous gringo boss strands them in the middle of a community that exploits them one minute and insults them the next, the two young men cock their sawed off shotgun and calmly take a troubled housewife hostage in her own home. "Why are you doing this?," asks Karen (Nina Zavarin), a strung- out and paranoid divorcee with little left to lose. "Por la dinero," replies Jesus. Before Los Bastardos reaches its shockingly violent climax, Jesus, Fausto, and Karen will have mapped out a contemporary North American wasteland of affectless, benumbed amorality far surpassing mere greed.

Co-produced by Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light, Battle in Heaven), Los Bastardos plumbs the depths of human brutality with the same cool cinematic certitude as the work of Michael Haneke and Bruno Dumont.

Multiple Sarcasms

Unhappy architect Gabriel (Timothy Hutton in unmade-bed form) dreams of shucking his job and becoming a playwright; his steady wife Annie (Dana Delany) isn't sure about the idea, but at least he has the counsel of his best friend Cari (Mira Sorvino) to help him along. The pieces of a vintage Woody Allen-esque romantic-angst comedy are here: Manhattan setting, grown-up characters, nice apartments, narcissistic impulses. The moment in time, 1979, feels halfheartedly evoked, but the movie's main problem is that the protagonist's dilemma isn't sufficiently explored, either in the script by Linda Morris and director Brooks Branch, or in Timothy Hutton's frowzy performance. There are a couple of able supporting performances by Stockard Channing (as Gabriel's agent, whose friendship with him is conveniently available for his play-writing ambitions) and Mario Van Peebles (as Gabriel's colorfully gay coworker, he's one of the only people in the movie who seem to be having fun). Along with the relative ease of Gabriel's writing career, the film fails to surprise in laying out Gabriel's romantic destiny as well--as movies about male heroes with female best friends so often do

Actors: Timothy Hutton, Mira Sorvino, Dana Delany, Mario Van Peebles, Stockard Channing
Directors: Brooks Branch

He returns to Engand and lives a life of peace, converting to puritanism, but soon the doings of an evil sorceror upset his plans and he must take up arms again.

James Purefoy has been cast as puritan swordsman Solomon Kane in a movie of the same name to be made from the stories of “Conan the Barbarian” creator Robert E. Howard.
